Edinburgh

In the very heart of Edinburgh rise a medieval palace and a castle perched atop an extinct volcano, which both bear witness to the city's dark and troubled past.

Besides the famous Edinburgh Castle, you will discover many other interesting sites steeped in the history and legends of this captivating city listed in the World Heritage list : the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre, the Scottish Parliament and the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith harbour, to mention but a few.

Take some time to go ghost hunting below the Royal Mile in a network of sinister underground streets, and vaults, abandoned and forgotten for several centuries until recently brought back to life !

Edinburgh's beautiful cityscape makes the perfect backdrop for the many festivals which are organized throughout the year. Spring events include the Film Festival, Ceilidh Culture Festival and Science Festival, with the Children's International Theatre Festival following in early summer. The cultural highlight of the year is of course the Edinburgh International Festival held in August each year, encompassing in fact several festivals including the Fringe Festival, Book Festival, Jazz and Blues Festival and the renowned Military Tattoo.

At festival time, shops turn into art galleries and churches become concert halls !

Edinburgh has also inspired famous book characters such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter...
